What Are Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilators?

HRV and ERV are basically just mechanical ventilators with an added bonus. These systems are designed with a heat exchanger, which allows them to transfer heat between airstreams. This makes it so that you can ventilate your home effectively without wasting the energy that you’ve used to heat or cool the outgoing air.

In the summer, for example, the HRV or ERV will transfer heat from the fresh, incoming air to the stale, outgoing air. To put it simply, it is a way to pre-cool the incoming air so that your AC doesn’t have to work as hard to do so. In the winter, the reverse applies: incoming air is pre-heated by the ERV or HRV to take the burden off of your heater.

What’s the Difference Between an HRV and an ERV?

As their names imply, there is of course a difference between HRV systems and ERV systems. Though they both work to transfer heat between airstreams, the ERV is different in that it also can transfer humidity between incoming and outgoing air.
